All About Emeralds

Gorgeous green emeralds aren’t just for spring babies anymore! Emeralds are widely considered to be the most popular green-hued gem, in part because of their illustrious history and rich symbolism. Join us as we dive deep into the dazzling verdant depths of everything emerald.

The first emeralds were mined in Egypt around 1500 B.C., they were a favorite of Cleopatra! The emerald is said to encourage growth, reflection, peace and balance. Many ancient cultures believed they had the ability to reveal truth, protect against evil spirits, and cure diseases. Emerald is said to be the most calming gem, it embodies unity and unconditional love. The profound symbolism across many cultures from around the world adds another layer to their unique beauty!

Emeralds range from 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. Although Emeralds are considered durable, they can still be susceptible to cracking, chipping, or scratching so they should be handled with some care. When it is time to clean your emerald steer clear of harsh detergents, chemical cleaners, and ultrasonic cleaning methods! Most emeralds are treated with oil to fill cracks and prevent chipping, you can occasionally wipe a layer of baby oil on your emerald to help prevent brittleness.

How to Care for Your Emerald

As a general rule, you should clean your emeralds a few times a year.

You can take your emeralds to a jeweler for professional cleaning, but it is also easy to gently clean them yourself. Just follow these instructions:

1. Use a soft microfiber cloth to remove the oil and dirt accumulated on the emerald jewelry.

2. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and put some mild soap in it. Place the jewelry into the soap and water mixture.

3. Use a soft toothbrush or a jewelry brush to gently clean off the jewelry and dry with a soft cloth.
