My studio in Portland is about four times the size of my Brooklyn studio for the same price. I’ve taken on an old friend as my first employee to help with production, bounce ideas off of and just act spastic with. I’m just tickled by how kind everybody is here in Portland.
Every piece in the new collection is named after a river or stream in Oregon. I loved the names that the First People used for bodies of water here, and thought they suited the pieces in my new collection. Some of my favorite names are Wenaha, Molalla, Tumalo, Tualatin—they have such a lovely cadence to them. It's also my way of paying homage and respect to a beautiful culture.
My pyrite cuffs came about by mistake. I had all these cuff bracelets that I’d screwed up the engraving and stamping on, so I got the idea to inlay crystals and pyrite on them. I brought several of them to my first couple of holiday shows in Brooklyn in 2012 and sold out every night. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect my crystal pyrite cuffs to take off the way they did!
One of my goals is to have my designs carried in all 50 states. I'm inching closer and closer. In the last couple of months I've added stockists in Alaska (they're killing it in Juneau!) Montana, Tennessee, Michigan, Washington and Colorado.
